The Jewish ethos changed fundamentally after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 580 B.C.E. Jewish thinkers had to re-conceptualize God as a deity whose presence is everywhere - not restricted to the destroyed temple; and who is capable of both vengeance and forgiveness. From this also stems the notion of a people who can sin and be redeemed.
